It was a Saturday afternoon and I was sitting at my computer writing about Grandprenting. I was writing about how I had committed to sending each of my Grandchildren what I call an “Electronic Hug” at least once a week. I stopped typing and grabbed my phone. I always start with my first-born Grandson Zak. He is 35 years old and lives about 6 hours away.
We messaged back and forth as follows:
Me: “While writing my Grandparenting book it brought back memories of hanging out with you. I was recalling our helicopter ride (a first for both of us), along with Monster Trucks and race cars. I think there is a theme of motors here. Hope you are doing well.”
His reply came swiftly:
Zak: “Very Well, I’m actually taking Little Dionte (my nephew) to go see some Monster Trucks tomorrow! I’m not sure who is more excited, me or him!” (Smiley face emoji)
Me: “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Here comes the amazing payoff for this Ole Grandpa.
Zak: I think about those same memories with you all the time too. I was just telling someone yesterday about our first ride in an airplane when we went to Chimney Rock. All those times we went and raced Go carts. I still have my signed photo of Jeff Gordon that you got me too…and my Mom;s signed photo of Harry Gant on a motorcycle! (I’m assuming that one came from you as well). I’m not sure I;ve officially thanked you for all the great times we’ve had. Butgenuinely, they meant more than you’ll ever know. I didn’t have a lot of great memories with anyone as a kid. Pretty much all of those came from you. Best of all, I learned from you how to pass that same gift down to other kids and try my best to be that person for every kid I can. So seriously THANK YOU!!! I love you Grandpa.”
Me: “Love you back.”
Magic moments come when we stay in touch by the ways they communicate, not just they ways we communicate.
Thanks for being a Caring Grandparent. Grandpa Neil
